Flight Mode or also known as Airplane mode is  a special mode of the smartphone. Under this phone, it disables all radio parts of the mobile phone but leaves other functions working. So, you can use music player, camera and gallery of the phone but cannot make or receive calls and cannot send or receive SMS.

This is called as flight mode of airplane mode because it is primary used when you are in the flights. Airlines do not allow the use of wireless devices to prevent interference with the airplane equipment.
