The Redmi Note series played a big role in shaping the affordable smartphone market in India. Earlier models brought premium features to lower price segments and quickly became very popular. However, things have changed in recent years. Redmi phones no longer feel as dominant as before. Many competing brands now offer similar or even better specifications.
With the Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G, Xiaomi is trying to strengthen its position again in the mid-range segment.
The phone starts at Rs. 29,999 in India for the 8GB RAM and 128GB storage variant. On paper, it looks like a solid upgrade. But does it deliver the same value the Redmi Note series was once known for?
Design and Display
The Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G does not introduce a completely new design. In fact, it looks very similar to its predecessor. The biggest change is that the phone now uses a flat design instead of curved edges.
The device measures 163.61 x 78.09 x 7.96mm and weighs around 210 grams. It is not the lightest phone, but the weight distribution is balanced and it feels comfortable in the hand.
The back panel is made of plastic instead of glass, but it does a good job of imitating a premium finish. The surface has a shiny look and feels smooth while also resisting fingerprints and smudges fairly well.
The squircle shaped camera module is also very similar to the previous model. It does not look particularly unique, but it blends nicely with the overall design.
Redmi offers the phone in three colour options: Silver Ash, Mirage Blue, and Carbon Black. The Silver Ash version looks simple and elegant. It may not stand out much, but it does not look boring either.
Durability is another strong point. The phone comes with IP68 and IP69K ratings for water and dust resistance. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, which should help against scratches and accidental drops.
On the front, the Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G features a large AMOLED display. It measures 6.83 inches and has a resolution of 2772 x 1280 pixels. The screen supports a 120Hz refresh rate and can reach up to 3200 nits peak brightness.
The display is one of the highlights of the phone. Colours look vibrant without being overly saturated. Text and images appear sharp thanks to the high resolution.
Scrolling through apps and social media feels smooth because of the 120Hz refresh rate. During testing, there were a couple of minor stutters, but these seemed more related to software optimisation than the display itself.
Outdoor visibility is very good. The screen remains readable even under direct sunlight. Slim bezels also help make the display feel immersive, which is great for watching videos and casual gaming.
Performance and Software
The Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Ultra processor. The base variant includes 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 256GB of storage using UFS 2.2.
In everyday usage, the phone performs well. Apps open quickly, multitasking works smoothly, and regular tasks such as browsing, social media, and video streaming run without issues.
However, the phone struggles a bit when handling heavier tasks. Running demanding apps or games pushes the device out of its comfort zone faster than expected. The use of UFS 2.2 storage also feels outdated for a phone priced close to Rs. 30,000.
Gaming performance is decent but not impressive. Games like BGMI and Call of Duty Mobile run smoothly on medium settings. Increasing graphics settings further results in noticeable heating and occasional frame drops.
Benchmark results also show that the phone falls behind some competitors in the same price range.
Software is probably the biggest weakness here. The phone runs Android 15 with Xiaomi’s HyperOS 2. Considering that Android 16 has already been available for months, this feels disappointing.
The interface itself will feel familiar to existing Xiaomi users. Animations and transitions are mostly smooth, but the overall experience feels slightly unpolished. The system sometimes slows down under heavy load.
Another issue is bloatware. There are several preinstalled apps and games such as Block Blast, Bubble Shooter, and TileFun. These can be removed, but they still affect the first impression.
Redmi promises three years of Android updates and four years of security updates, which is acceptable but not the best in this segment.
Cameras
The Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G features a triple camera setup at the back. The main highlight is the 200MP Samsung HPE primary sensor with an f/1.7 aperture.
Alongside it, there is an 8MP ultra wide camera and a third small sensor that does not add much value.
The primary camera performs well in good lighting conditions. Photos come out detailed with accurate colours and decent dynamic range. Skin tones look natural in most situations, although some shots may appear slightly flat in contrast.
Portrait mode works reasonably well. Subject separation is generally good, but edge detection is not always perfect.
There is no telephoto camera, which means zooming relies on digital cropping. Image quality starts dropping once you go beyond 2x zoom.
Low light performance is acceptable. Photos remain usable with good exposure, but fine details are often lost.
The 8MP ultra wide camera is useful when you want to capture wider scenes. However, there is a noticeable drop in sharpness compared to the main camera.
On the front, the phone has a 20MP selfie camera. Selfies are decent in daylight with natural skin tones, but facial details could be better. In low light, images become softer and slightly noisy.
Overall, the camera system works well for casual photography but does not stand out in this price segment.
Battery and Charging
Battery life is one of the stronger aspects of the Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G.
The phone packs a large 6,580mAh battery. With normal usage such as calling, browsing, and watching videos, the device easily lasts a full day. Casual users may even stretch it beyond a day.
Charging speeds are not as impressive though. The phone supports 45W wired charging and takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach full charge.
Considering that the slightly more expensive Pro+ model supports 100W charging, the slower charging here feels a bit disappointing.
Verdict
The Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G gets several basics right. It has a sturdy design, a large and bright display, dependable battery life, and a good primary camera for everyday photography.
However, it struggles to stand out in a very competitive mid-range market. Performance is only average for the price, storage speeds feel outdated, and the software experience with HyperOS still needs improvement.
At Rs. 29,999, the phone will still make sense for users upgrading from older Redmi Note models. But buyers looking for the kind of unbeatable value that the Redmi Note series once offered may find stronger alternatives from other brands in the same price range.
