It helps smartphone manufacturers to add an additional layer of scratch resistant layer to protect the touchscreen of the smartphones.

Corning has a research team which works on improving the strength of the glass. Currently Corning Gorilla Glass 4 (4th generation) is in use and smartphones have started adopting this glass.
