NPC definition
An NPC, short for Non-Playable Character, is a character in a video game that the player cannot directly control. These characters are controlled by the game’s artificial intelligence (AI) and are designed to perform specific roles. NPCs are an essential part of most games because they help build the world, drive the story forward, and make the gameplay feel alive.
In simple terms, while you control your main character or avatar, NPCs are the other people, creatures, or entities you interact with inside the game.
Quest Givers: These are NPCs that hand out missions or objectives to the player. For example, in role-playing games (RPGs) like Skyrim or World of Warcraft, NPCs guide you through quests that help progress the storyline or unlock rewards.
Merchants and Traders: Many games have NPCs that act as shopkeepers, blacksmiths, or traders. Players interact with them to buy, sell, or upgrade items.
Companions: Some NPCs join the player’s journey as allies. They fight alongside you, offer advice, or provide emotional support within the story.
Enemies: Not all NPCs are friendly. Many act as enemies or bosses controlled by the game AI. They challenge the player’s skills and create obstacles.
Background Characters: These NPCs make the game world feel more realistic. They may not have a major role, but they fill cities, towns, or villages, making the environment lively.
In earlier games, NPCs had very limited interaction. They repeated the same dialogue or had fixed patterns. However, modern games use advanced AI to make NPCs smarter and more realistic. Some NPCs can respond differently based on player choices, making the game feel more dynamic. For example, games like Cyberpunk 2077 or The Witcher 3 use complex NPC systems to create a living world.
