XML definition

XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is a markup language that is used to structure, store, and transport data. It is similar in many ways to HTML, which is used to format and display data in web pages, but XML is designed to be more flexible and extensible.

XML uses a system of tags and attributes to define the structure of the data. These tags and attributes can be created and defined by the user, which makes it possible to store and transport data for a wide variety of applications.

XML is a widely used standard for storing, transporting and exchanging data between systems, platforms and applications. It is often used in combination with other technologies such as XSLT (eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations) and XSL-FO (eXtensible Stylesheet Language Formatting Objects) to display and format the data, and web services technologies such as SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) and REST (Representational State Transfer) to access the data over the network.

It is also used in many industry standards like XHTML, OpenDocument and RSS.

XML is not a programming language, it is a markup language which means that it is used to mark-up or annotate the data with tags and attributes.
