NPU definition
An NPU, or Neural Processing Unit, is a special chip designed to handle AI and machine learning tasks on a device. While the CPU and GPU can also process AI workloads, the NPU is built specifically for these operations, making it faster and more efficient.
Modern smartphones, tablets, and laptops use NPUs to power features like real-time photo enhancement, voice recognition, background blur in videos, face unlock, on-device translation, and various smart suggestions. Instead of sending data to cloud servers, the NPU can process many AI tasks locally, which improves speed and protects user privacy.
As AI-driven features grow, NPUs have become one of the most important components in modern chipsets like Apple’s Neural Engine, Google’s Tensor NPU, and Qualcomm’s AI Engine.
All three work together, but the NPU is what gives modern devices their "smart" capabilities.
