AAC or Advanced Audio Coding is a file format of audio files for lossy digital audio compression. This file-format is used to store audio files on Internet, PCs and portable music players and phones.

AAC is the successor of MP3 which aims to offer improved audio quality in a less size files. It was officially declared an international standard by the MPEG in April 1997. Now we have AAC+ and AAC++ as newer versions of this digital audio standard.
