W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) is an international organization that develops and maintains standards for the World Wide Web. It was founded in 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, and is now run by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM), and Keio University in Japan.
W3C's mission is to lead the World Wide Web to its full potential by developing standards and guidelines that ensure the long-term growth of the Web. W3C develops and maintains a variety of standards and specifications, including:
W3C's standards and guidelines are developed through a consensus-based process that involves input from a wide range of stakeholders, including web developers, browser vendors, and accessibility experts.
The organization is also involved in research and development activities, for example, in the field of web accessibility, semantic web, web of things, and web performance.
