What is What is NavIC? - Definition?

NavIC definition

NavIC is India's own positioning system launched as an alternative to GPS. NavIC stands for Navigation with Indian Constellation. It has been built by India's space agency ISRO to offer accurate real-time positioning, timing services, and messaging.

India built's NavIC to drop dependency on GPS for military-related operations. For now, NavIC just covers India and neighboring countries as opposed to GPS which covers the whole earth. Nasa has confirmed that NavIC covers the whole India and 1500kms of the area from its borders. Here's an image to show how much area Navic covers.

NAVIC Coverage

NavIC has 7 different satellites located in the high orbit of the Earth at an altitude of 35k km from Earth’s surface. India the coming years, NASA has plans to launch more satellites to improve the accuracy and coverage of NavIC.

In October 2019, ISRO signed a deal with Qualcomm to bring NavIC-compatible smartphones. After that, Qualcomm launched a few SoCs with full NavIC support. Now several smartphones including Realme X50 Pro and iQOO 3 have NavIC support.
